Q. What is Scholastic Emergency Services?

    Scholastic Emergency Services is an emergency assistance company that provides     medical aid to eligible participants traveling 100 miles or more away from their     permanent address, campus address or in another country. If a student or his or her     eligible dependent becomes ill or has an accident, one simple phone call to Scholastic     Emergency Services will put our worldwide resources in motion for proper medical care     anywhere in the world.

Q. What main services does Scholastic Emergency Services provide?

    Scholastic Emergency Services helps you during a medical or personal emergency while     traveling; offering a number of vital services including medical consultation and     evaluation, medical referrals, medical monitoring, hospital admission guarantee,     companion transport, patient evacuation and repatriation, return of mortal remains and     more.

Q. What happens if a foreign hospital doesn't recognize my health insurance            identification card?

    In fact, many foreign hospitals do not accept American health insurance. That's why     Scholastic Emergency Services offers a guarantee of foreign hospital admission. We will     verify coverage, or if necessary, forward funds to the hospital to ensure that you receive     prompt medical treatment.

Q. What is companion transport?

    If an eligible participant is traveling alone and it seems likely that they will be     hospitalized for more than seven days, Scholastic Emergency Services will transport a     family member or friend to the patient's location.

Q. What happens when I'm ready to be discharged but I still need assistance?

    If you still need assistance at the point of discharge from the hospital, Scholastic     Emergency Services will arrange for you to come home with a medical or non-medical     escort as appropriate.

Q. Are there other services that I should know about?

    Scholastic Emergency Services provides a number of ‘personal’ services including     emergency message transmission, care of minor children left unattended due to the     medical incident, prescription assistance, and legal, counseling and interpreter referrals.

Q. I don't travel internationally--what's the benefit of assistance services to me?

    Scholastic Emergency Services will help you with any emergency situation that occurs     100 miles or more from your permanent address, campus address or while in another     country--this can mean your weekend getaway or trip cross country. If you become ill or     have an accident while traveling domestically, you may not know where to turn for care.     Scholastic Emergency Services is ready 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for assistance     and advice.

Q. If my doctor at home tells me I need to go to a particular hospital for treatment,            will Scholastic Emergency Services transport me?

    No, we are not a personal transport service. Scholastic Emergency Services helps     students in need who are 100 miles or more away from their permanent address,     campus location or in another country.

Q. If I have an accident or illness, and I or the hospital arranges for all the necessary            transportation, will Scholastic Emergency Services reimburse me for the            expenses involved?

    No. Scholastic Emergency Services is a service provider, not an insurance company. As     such it is required that Scholastic Emergency Services make the arrangements for all     services. We cannot reimburse participants for any assistance expenses not arranged     and provided by Scholastic Emergency Services.

    If you will be in a non-U.S. location for more than one semester, please contact     Scholastic Emergency Services to receive valuable pre-trip and expatriate coverage     information, and visit www.assistamerica.com for insightful pre-trip information. If you     are familiar with your benefits and don't have any questions, there is no specific need     to contact Scholastic Emergency Services prior to travel. Remember to take your     Scholastic Emergency Services ID card with you though, and call right away if you need     medical advice or assistance.
